Let Your Cans Inspire Before They Expire

When was the last time you checked the back of your pantry?

You might find a few canned vegetables, beans, soups, or other shelf-stable foods that seemed like a good idea at the grocery store but never made it onto the dinner table. Instead of letting them sit unused until they expire, consider giving them a new purpose.

Food donations help keep local pantry shelves stocked with nutritious options for individuals and families throughout our community. A few extra items from your pantry can help ensure someone else has ingredients for their next meal.

Before donating, take a moment to check expiration dates and make sure all items are unopened and in good condition. Foods with plenty of shelf life remaining are the most helpful because they can be distributed quickly and enjoyed while they’re still fresh.

Not sure what to donate? Pantry staples such as canned fruits and vegetables, beans, soups, rice, pasta, peanut butter, and other nonperishable foods are always appreciated.

A pantry cleanout may seem like a small task, but it can have a meaningful impact. Those extra cans and boxes taking up space on your shelves can help fill a grocery bag, stock a pantry, and support our neighbors working toward stability.

Looking for more ways to help?

Consider hosting a food drive with your workplace, neighborhood, faith community, or social group. At Caritas of Austin, we use platforms like Amazon Wishlist to see the pantry’s most-needed items and donate directly.

Whether it’s a single can from your pantry or a collection of groceries from a community drive, every donation helps keep shelves stocked and meals within reach. So before those cans expire, let them inspire.

Your next pantry refresh could help put food on the table for a neighbor or a family!
